Little Big Book Club (LBBC)
The Little Big Book Club (LBBC) is proudly supported by the Government of South Australia through The Department for Education & Child Development, Public Library Services and the Public Libraries of South Australia with the support of Local Government.
Every baby born in South Australia in 2013 will be given the best start in life thanks to The Little Big Book Club's It's Story Time Reading Pack initiative. Parents and carers can collect their 2013 Reading Pack from their local public library, Child & Family Health Services (CaFHS) and selected outreach services from January 2013.
The Little Big Book Club reading development initiative is in its seventh year of delivering 23,000 FREE It’s Story Time Reading Packs to South Australian families with a baby aged 0-12 months.
The Little Big Book Club supports parents, carers and the early childhood and library sector to regularly share books with children from infancy by providing free, universal access to reading and play resources for families with young children.
The early years are crucial for a child’s brain development, with 80% occurring between birth and the age of three and 90% by age five. This is why it is so important for parents and carers to read to babies from birth.
Long term benefits of sharing books, songs and play with young children include:
- Bonding between parent and child - babies that have a strong attachment with a loved one feel happy and confident
- Learning about language – books, songs, rhymes and conversations introduce children to new words in meaningful ways
- Development of fine motor skills – handling books and singing songs with actions help children develop coordination in their fingers and hands

A strong early literacy foundation- regular exposure to books and stories helps children develop the necessary emergent literacy skills they will need when they start school
The 2013 It’s Story Time Reading Pack includes the following:
- It’s Bed Time Picture Book and CD
- It’s Play Time Activity Book
- It’s Rhyme Time Book and DVD
- Twinkle, Twinkle Growth Chart
- SA Public Library Brochure
The It’s Story Time Reading Pack is The Little Big Book Club’s first engagement point with parents and carers. The ongoing development of a child’s early literacy skills is further encouraged through The Little Big Book Club’s Monthly Book Selections program, comprehensive website with free downloadable book lists, nursery rhymes, tip sheets and activities, as well as the promotion of Baby Bounce and Story Time sessions which are offered at most SA libraries.
