The Little Big Book Club - Free Reading Packs for SA Families

The Little Big Book Club is a program of Raising Literacy Australia, a not for profit organisation that supports parents, carers and the early childhood and library sector to regularly share books with children from infancy. The early years are crucial for a child’s brain development, with 80% occurring between birth and the age of three and 90% by age five. This is why it is so important for parents and carers to read to babies from birth.

To support families in their reading journey, there are three different reading packs which are available to collect when a child reaches a specific age milestone. They include:

TheBaby Reading Pack is distributed via Child and Family Health Service (CaFHs) Universal Home Visit. Families with premature babies will receive their pack at their hospital: Women's and Children's Hospital Special Care Baby Unit, Flinders Medical Centre Neonatal Unit and Lyell McEwin Hospital Mothercare Service. The packs will generally be given to parents at the first home visit, however if parents do miss out for any reason, they can collect one next time they visit their local CaFHs centre. The pack is designed to encourage parents to read, play, talk and sing right from the start and establish regular reading opportunities with their baby.

The Toddler Reading Pack can be collected from CaFHS, DECD Children's Centres, DECD and Catholic Education supported playgroups, selected preschools with toddler playgroups and selected outreach services. Developed in consultation with the early childhood sector, a key focus of the pack is the introduction of simple numeracy concepts to support young children’s emergent numeracy and literacy skills.

The Preschool Reading Pack is available at DECD preschools or kindergartens (Govt), participating Catholic preschools and participating private/non-government preschools. Developed in consultation with the nutrition team at SA Health, the newly developed resources have a focus on school readiness and food literacy; providing families with current information and an understanding of the nutritional requirements for young children. There are also two fantastic picture books from local publisher Working Title Press.
