Local history is the study of history in a geographically local context and it often concentrates on the local community. It incorporates cultural and social aspects of history.

Through Local History Collections, Libraries aim to preserve and promote the history and culture of their district. Local History tends to be a special part of a Library. Items are frequently rare, sometimes even unique, and are kept for the enjoyment of people today and future generations. Collections may include such things as council reports, oral histories, photographs, church records and more.

Libraries may also offer access to online resources especially designed to trace family histories, births, deaths, marriages and immigration records.

For information on local history and associated online resources contact your local library.
